Whenever I think of summer on the Atlantic City boardwalk, one place instantly comes to mind: The Funnel Cake House. A boardwalk staple since 1999, this sweet spot has become a cherished tradition for families from across the tri-state area, many of whom make it a point to stop in for that iconic powdered sugar-dusted treat.
I had the chance to sit down with Tarek, the owner’s son, who’s been working behind the counter since he was just 12 years old, back when he was just tall enough to reach the fryer. Now, with five years in a managerial role, he carries forward the family legacy. Tarek practically grew up on the boardwalk, spending summers helping at the shop, learning to surf, and playing at the arcade with other boardwalk kids.
Like most seasonal businesses in Atlantic City, The Funnel Cake House runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, typically open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Each day is long, bustling, and demanding.
Over the past 26 years, they’ve experimented with deep-frying just about everything. From butter to lemons, but these days, the focus is on serving their perfected signature funnel cakes. With more than 25 topping options, fresh batches straight from the fryer, and portions that could easily feed two (but you’ll want it all to yourself), this spot is an Atlantic City summer essential.
